Preventive Measures and Sustainable Practices for Insect Breeding
From steak to pork, chicken to fish, an animal protein often takes center stage at Thailand’s dinner table, however as resources shrink and population grows day by day, it is time to look for new sustainable food to consider for a better living and future. Insects are a super-food compared to an equivalent amount of beef or chicken, so when we are thinking about the mankind which is diminishing its resources and mounting its human population, the insects are very well positioned to be a great source of protein and micronutrients. They acquire drastically less land, water, and feed; can be produced all-year-round with better breeding practices in farms. There is tremendous potential for this to become an industry because by the year 2050, the world will be home to more than nine billion people to feed. The present study suggested three molecular techniques including DNA barcoding, genotyping, and pathogen examination to assist insect breeders for sustainable breeding practices.
