Efficacy of manual physical therapy for treatment of chronic non-traumatic unilateral shoulder pain: protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Akshay Kumar, Ritu Malik

Abstract

Manual therapy is a physical treatment primarily used by various physiotherapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and disability. In the present study, Manual therapy approach is used for treatment of chronic non-traumatic unilateral shoulder pain through a randomized controlled trial. Forty patients following chronic non-traumatic unilateral shoulder pain were included in a randomized controlled study. Assessments were made at baseline and after time intervals of 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks using manual physical therapy as a physiotherapy approach. The outcome measure is the overall score of the English language version of the Disability of the Arm Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI). The finding of DASH and SPADI shows that manual therapy effectively reduces shoulder pain of the patients up to 24 weeks applying it. In conclusion, manual therapy is one of the most effective approach for reducing chronic non-traumatic unilateral shoulder pain to the patients.
