Analysis of morphometric characters and population dynamics of Ompok pabda (Hamilton, 1822) from Gomti River in Northern India

Braj Kishor Gupta, U. K. Sarkar, S. K. Bharadwaj

The catfish Ompok pabda (Hamilton) locally known as Pabdah (butter fish) is an indigenous small freshwater fish belonging to the family Siluridae.  Length-frequency data of a member of commercially important catfish, O. pabda was collected monthly from the different sampling sites and related landing centers of Gomti River during May 2008 to April 2010. The annual size frequency distribution obtained from monthly (alternate month) samples showed exploited sizes between 7.0-20 cm. The modal lengths with cohorts in different months were identified by monthly size frequency distribution. The length frequency distribution over a year suggested that the population consisted of a maximum of three age groups, with mean values being 16.5 cm, 12.7 cm and 9.6 cm TL, for the respective groups. For O. pabda, recruitment was found to occur once in a year during August to November. The highest and lowest percent recruitment were observed in August and September 2008, respectively. The computed maximum allowable limit of exploitation (Emax) for the Y⁄R and B⁄R was 0.42; corresponding fishing mortality was 0.29 year-1.
